Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme (protein-digesting enzyme) isolated from the micro-organism, Serratia E15. This enzyme is naturally present in the silkworm intestine and is processed commercially today through fermentation. This immunologically active enzyme is completely bound to the alpha 2 macroglobulin in biological fluids. Histologic studies reveal powerful anti-inflammatory effects of this naturally occurring enzyme.

Serrapeptase is a common treatment for inflammatory and traumatic swellings. A double-blind study was conducted to determine the effect of Serrapeptase on post-operative swelling and pain. Sixty-six patients were treated surgically for fresh rupture of a ligament in the knee. The group receiving Serrapeptase exhibited a 50% reduction of swelling, compared to the other group. The patients receiving Serrapeptase also became more rapidly pain-free.

Hans Nieper, a German doctor and scientist, discovered this natural enzyme over 20 years ago.
