Tae kwon do is a martial art and fighting sport that was started in Korea. It aims to achieve self control, modesty, perseverance and indomitable spirit.
Through dedicated training the martial artist can hope to gain both mental and physical fitness. By dedicated practising and repeating each and every move to near perfection, over time become more and more patient. Self-confidence is attained through the power of one’sown body and the wisdom of how to use it anywhere and in any given situation. Sparring helps us build humility, courage, alertness, and also accuracy and develops self-control. By doing Taewkondo forms , we maximise our flexibility, grace, balance and co-ordination.
Through the discipline and our interaction with other students, we learn co-operation and mutual respect. Along with gaining a healthier, leaner and more flexible body, we also gain stamina through a typical training routine. The health-related effects of training are abundant.
Taekwondo has been going through a learning process for over several thousand years. Nonetheless, it was not until the 1950s that Taekwondo was standardized and organized by General Choi Hong Hi and the sport was brought outside of Korea, at first to Vietnam and the USA, and to the rest of the world. At the moment, Taekwondo is organized in 3 international federations: the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), with headquarters in Seoul, Korea; the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), with headquarters in Austria; and the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF) with headquarters in Korea. Taekwondo is now in the olympics with the first competitions held during the Sydney olympics
